Week of August 17

Friday
We took the STAR test in the lab today, followed by an Error/Fixit w/s (Harry Potter) and the distinctly challenging Whodunnit Crossword (#1). Way to go, Angela, for being the first one to solve the puzzle!
Homework Read!

Thursday
We presented the I Am Poems today - it was great to see the effort students put into them!
Homework None. Tomorrow we take the STAR/Aspire tests in the lab.

Wednesday
I checked for the Learning Styles Inventory Reflection but did not collect it. Students worked on the "This is your Life" worksheet - those not finished should complete it by the weekend. Bring this worksheet (and the answers) to class every day - we'll be using them as writing prompts throughout the year. Passed out templates for the I Am Poem and read two examples. We then wrote one stanza as a class. Students had time to work on their own poem in class.
Homework I Am Poem and "This is your Life" if necessary.

Tuesday
We continued with the multiple intelligence surveys and discovered what type of learner we are. Top Five Books Ever was collected (some students presented; the rest will present tomorrow).

Homework Learning Styles Inventory Reflection. (a) What had you already known? (b) What surprised you? (c) What 2-3 things (from the strategies section) can you do to make sure you'll have a successful academic year? (Use what you learned from the Descriptions and Strategies paperwork.)

Monday
Welcome back! Today we spent time reviewing the syllabus, classroom rules and procedures, and getting to know each other. We did the youth version of the Seven Intelligences Checklist - the corresponding half-sheet was collected; students kept the original survey. The Six Traits of Writing handout was given to each student (to be brought to school every day).

Homework is to get the paperwork signed, and to make a list of the top five books ever (in the student's opinion). Include the title of the book, the author, and the reason why you chose it as one of the top five (or, why you would recommend it to someone).
