We graded the cap, pel/puls Roots Review Test and completed Stave Five Review.

Reviewed how to summarize (handout). Practiced summarizing a paragraph. After viewing and discussing a poor example, worked a little more to perfect own copy. Then viewed and discussed an example of a well-written summary.

Prompt: What piece of furniture in your house has the most interesting story behind it? Write about it.
Finished and collected the Stave Three Reviews from yesterday.
Time for silent reading.

Time for silent reading and review of language arts vocabulary.

Thursday

Write the prompt, skip a line, and respond to it:
Write a fake news story that includes the following words:
- tater tot casserole
- geraniums
- zipper
- karate
Finished reading Stave Three in class and then had some time for silent reading and AR tests.

Study vocab, roots, parts of speech, etc., for tomorrow's quiz.



Wednesday
Early Release - Special schedule.

Tuesday
Today we read and discussed Stave Three as far as the bottom of p. 231 ("-in a glow!")

Monday
This week's root word list (pel, puls) was distributed.
Students worked on a characterization exercise about Scrooge using quotes from Stave Two. Last week's Stave Two Review was handed back, and students were given feedback on the grade they received. We also graded Friday's Roots Quiz.

Week of Jan. 4

Friday
Students took this week's Roots Quiz (cap) and then worked on a characterization exercise, which was turned in at the end of the period.

Thursday
Finished reading Stave Two and worked with partner on Stave Two Review questions. These were turned in at the end of the period.

Wednesday
Handed out A Christmas Carol Study Guide. You will need to know the answers to these questions for a test on the novel (after we've finished reading).
Continued reading A Christmas Carol, picking up with Stave 2. We will finish the section in class tomorrow.

Tuesday
Stave One Vocabulary quiz - graded and collected.
We continued with the Word Chop activity from yesterday (graded and collected) - it went longer than expected and so we did not get to read the novel today. Tomorrow for sure!

Monday
Writing Prompt (to be completed in composition notebooks): In 1789, the first U.S. Presidential election was held. If you were running for President at that time, on what issue(s) would you have based your campaign?
Gap-fill exercise on A Christmas Carol.
New roots word list - cap. Quiz Friday.
Stave One Vocabulary review - graded and collected.
We read a w/s on The Worth of Trivia (Jan. 4 is Trivia Day), then answered comprehension questions on the piece. This was graded and collected.
We began the Word Chop w/s, related to the Trivia article, and will finish in class tomorrow.
