Students received a half sheet with the assignments for The House of Dies Drear Ch. 8-19. They had time to work on this in class.
Homework:
On Tuesday I will give you time to finish your "Open Mind" assignment. We will present those and the banker/lawyer "I Am" poems.
Keep studying the roots, vocab, parts of speech, etc. Roots test will be next week.
The House of Dies Drear tasks are due Mon., Sept. 13, when we will also be taking the AR test on the book (worth 9 points towards your AR goal).

The Open Mind Activity:
Students were broken into six groups. Each group focused on one of the stages (beginning, middle, end) for either the banker or the lawyer.
Using "The Bet" story and their completed worksheet from last night, inside a "blank mind" students were to draw symbols or select phrases from the text to represent either the banker's or lawyer's thoughts at that point in the text. Outside the diagram, they explained why they chose those particular symbols and phrases. Student will present to the class next week.
Homework:
"I Am" Poem from the perspective of either the banker or the lawyer (half sheet template was distributed).
Vocab/Roots/Parts of Speech test has been postponed until next week.
Have your "Dies Drear" book in class tomorrow.

Students responded to this prompt in their writing journals:
How long would you be willing to stay in solitary confinement for $2 million?
We then shared responses.
We read and discussed "The Bet" short story by Anton Chekhov.
Homework:
Complete the handout on how the lawyer and the banker changed during the story.
Tuesday
Collected "All Summer in a Day" tasks.
Read and discussed "Windows of Wonder" short story (vocabulary, fig. language, mood, etc.).
Students worked with a partner to describe the main character, filling in a graphic organizer.
Homework:
Answer any two of these questions on the back of the graphic organizer and using complete sentences:
p. 148 #3, 6
p. 149 #2

Monday

I checked that students had the questions to the first seven chapters of The House of Dies Drear finished (did not collect).
We learned five ways to elaborate, and then practiced doing so. Using the story of Tough Boris as a springboard, students chose two adjectives and elaborated on them using any three of the new ways we learned today.
Homework:
All Summer in a Day tasks are due Tuesday.
There will be a Roots / Vocab test on Friday. Study Tales vocab, parts of speech, roots, etc. for it.
